Students gain exclusive insights into Picnic's state-of-the-art logistics during a guided tour of the new Oberhausen fulfillment center.

As part of the “Warehouse Management Systems” course, FLW organized an excursion for students to the newly opened fulfillment center (FCA) of online grocery retailer Picnic in Oberhausen. The excursion provided students with an in-depth guided tour of the entire facility, following the material flow from inbound to outbound operations.

During the visit, the group explored various warehouse areas—such as goods receiving and order picking—and learned about key material flow systems, including conveyor technology and storage solutions. Throughout the tour, the students engaged in lively discussions with Picnic’s logistics experts, exchanging insights on technologies and operational processes.

At the Oberhausen FCA, Picnic picks and prepares customer orders for dispatch to its regional depots. The company has invested approximately €150 million in the facility, which spans over 50,000 square meters and operates across three climate zones ranging from -18°C to +20°C. The warehouse features 21 kilometers of conveyor systems and is powered by 1,500 high-performance robots. At the core of the operation lies Picnic’s fully self-developed software platform, which seamlessly coordinates all robotic movements in real time.

Founded in the Netherlands in 2015, Picnic is an online supermarket delivering groceries and everyday products directly to customers' homes. Since 2018, Picnic has also been active in Germany, with a particular focus on North Rhine-Westphalia.
